Pocket of Holding - Blackhawk! Pocket Pack

For our first series of posts, I'm going to cover a subject I live by.  It's called Every Day Carry, or EDC.  I have a very simple philosophy in life.  I like to have what I need when I need it.  I absolutely detest when a package won't open, or when I've got a non screw top bottle to open, or when I have to cut the red or blue wire to save everyone in a huge skyscraper from another catastrophe, or how about a screwdriver that works on glasses?  I could go on for hours.  The problem here is, by the time you are done, you will have put Batman's utility belt to shame...  While he's got the money, the style, and the bad ass butler, let's face it YOU don't.

That leaves your pockets...  and the minute you put more than one thing in there, they get mixed up, scratch each other, and poke the stuffing out of your leg.  Enter the concept of the Pocket of Holding!  Various manufacturers make some fine products along these lines, however the particular item that fills this role for me is the BLACKHAWK! Pocket Pack.

This pocket organizer is NOT for everyone... If you run around in skin tight pants, booty shorts, bikini bottoms, or those famous superhero tights, this organizer may not be for you.  However if you have goodly sized pockets in khaki's or perhaps some form of uniform pants, this one might just be a godsend.  These images are my personal pocket organizer that I've been abusing for well over a year now, and I almost never leave the house without it.

First area of containment you'll notice in the picture above is the large external mesh pouch.  This has a small Velcro tab that keeps the top close to the pouch.  This allows items larger than the pouch to be kept readily accessible.  I keep a folding knife here myself, keeping it so that it will not unfold in my pocket, yet is readily accessible without removing the whole pouch.

First, lets take a closer look at the outside:
Notice the loop for grabbing and holding it, very handy for pocket removal.
Closer view of the handle, notice the stitching is pretty sturdy, even though only one row.

If even after being told you will NEVER be as cool as batman... if there is no hope for you, that's fine, we still have belt loops for outside of pocket carry.  Versatile!

Notice the zipper includes sturdy pull tabs.  I usually break cheap versions of these, but this one has lasted over a year of daily use.

On the inside, there's loops for various items, 2 main pouches, and a short lanyard.

Notice the raised lip/edging around the entire pouch, good for stability of the pouch.  The end of the zipper is well stitched to keep things together.

While well secured to the pouch, the lanyard is affixed to the outside of the pouch.  Honestly I'd rather have seen it on the inside hinge area so that the lanyard can be outside of the pouch while it's closed.

The hook at the end of the lanyard is not beefy, nor does it lock well, however for an inside of the pouch hook, this is more than sufficient.  You'll notice in the image above i use a NiteIze S-Biner to hold more than one item easily here.  A normal nickel or stainless split ring will work here just as well, aside from the not so quick release.  Notice also the stitching is more than sufficient to keep this on for the lifetime of the pouch.

End result here, you'll easily be able to amaze your friends with the amount of interesting things you can produce.  Look at what I carry in mine (minus a couple of things, even I have my secrets):

Sure, that's a bunch of crazy, especially seeing how that's all just ONE of my pockets' worth of stuff.  I promise I'll cover all of this in future posts.

Just so you know, this also is not only made by Blackhawk! but also by various manufacturers:

Spec-Ops Brand Mini Pocket Organizer - With no front patch for brand identification

Maxpedition E.D.C. Pocket Organizer - With a fuzzy Velcro patch for your own branding

There you have it, tons of possibilities to keep your stuff organized.  Next time you see one of your friends running around on the street pretending to be Batman, just send them here.

I've gotten a lot of comments in real life from women saying "That's not really for me," usually based on differences in womens clothing and how women carry stuff.
I don't know about you, but most of the purses I've seen women carry are usually a messy conglomeration of junk thrown and and mixed together till it's a chore to find anything. If it fits in a pocket, I'm betting it'll fit even better in most purses.
